Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0-0 25 KOs) will be fighting against Shane Mosley (46-5-0 39KOs) on May 1, 2010 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mosley was supposedly to fight Andre Berto last January 30 but because of the earthquake in Haiti which emotionally affected Andre Berto and made him to decide to cancel the fight. On the other hand, Pacquiao vs. Mayweather also failed to happen because of failed negotiations to make the fight possible. This is the reason why Golden Boy promotions organized the fight Mayweather vs. Mosley. Boxing analyst around the world sees this match as a fight to watch out for Mosley is a stronger fighter and he promised that he will definitely put a lost record for the first time forFloyd Mayweather Jr. Actually, its my personal reason too why I will watch the fight. I want to see if Mosley can really beat Mayweather.

Mosley reveals game plan vs Mayweather

MANILA, Philippines – “Sugar” Shane Mosley said he knows exactly what to do against undefeated Floyd “Money” Mayweather, Jr. when he defends his World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight super championship belt on May 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Floyd is the type of fighter who, if he doesn't feel comfortable or confident, he's not going to fight you. So I have to be ready for that type of mentality that he has of touching and moving, touching and moving. I have to make it difficult for him to just touch and move,” Mosley told Lem Satterfield of Fanhouse.com.

“So that's going to be one of the assignments is to make it harder for him to get his shots off so that he fights me a little bit. When he fights me, that will open him up for my speed and power,” he added.

Mosley even vowed to arm himself with a “total package of things” when he enters the ring at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

He said he might focus on a body attack in a couple of rounds and then focus on just attacking Mayweather in another round.

“With Floyd, you have to focus on everything. You have to have a broad picture,” he remarked.

Mayweather to retire after May 1?

The 38-year-old Mosley, meantime, already declared that he will surely defeat the 33-year-old Mayweather on May 1.

“No disrespect, but I really don't think he's been in there with a fighter like me. I believe that when I beat Floyd, I will send him into retirement. May 1 will be Mayweather's first loss,” said Mosley.

Although the WBA super welterweight champion expects Mayweather to try to disrupt his rhythm, he said he will use whatever advantage he has over the undefeated fighter.

“I'm pretty sure that Floyd will feel more power in this fight that he will have ever had to feel… And if I can get that knockout, if I get that one shot, and if I can get him hurt, then I'm going to be all over him,” he noted.

All about timing

Mayweather, for his part, argued that he is not merely a defensive fighter.

“I think Shane is basing everything on power and speed,” he said in a FightFan.com article by Ace Freeman.

“It doesn’t work like that. I believe everything in life is timing and inches. It’s not just about being a defensive fighter. It’s about being a smart fighter.”

Mayweather (40-0, with 25 KOs) and Mosley (46-5, 39 knockouts) were supposed to figure in matches early this year against 7-division champion Manny Pacquiao and Andre Berto, respectively.

The Mosley-Berto bout was cancelled after Berto pulled out of the fight following the devastating Haiti earthquake which affected his family members while the Pacquiao-Mayweather blockbuster fight did not push through because of the fighters’ disagreement on the drug testing protocol. – With reports from FightFan.com and Fanhouse.com

Opinion: Pacquiao vs. Mosley should be better than Pacquiao vs. Mayweather

After watching a lopsided and boring fight between Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey last March 13, boxing fans look forward to an action-packed fight and they believe that a Pacquaio-Mosley match would be an action fight worth watching. Despite Manny Pacquiao's hint at retirement after disposing Joshua Clottey of Ghana last March 13 in a lopsided fight at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, boxing fans believe that the Filipino boxer is good for two to three more fights before finally retiring. Although there are at least four possible challengers to the WBO welterweight championship belt being held by Pacquiao, boxing fans say it is only Floyd Mayweather, Jr and Shane Mosley who can draw record breaking attendance that promoters need in order to generate enough revenues for the fighters

Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach has mentioned Edwin Valero, Juan Manuel Marquez and Antonio Margarito as the Filipino boxer's next possible opponents on top of Mayweather and Mosley. After watching the lopsided bout between Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey early this month, boxing fans think that they have been 'shortchanged' by the way Clottey fought. Those who paid to watch the fight said it was a boring match. Boxing fans want to see a good fight. Many believe that a Pacquiao-Mayweather match is a crowd-drawer but at the same time it could also be a boring fight as Freddie Roach have opined. He said that Mayweather , just like Clottey is a defensive fighter and he will be busy inside the ring defending Pacquiao's flurry of punches as the pound-for pound king is known for his speed and punching power.

Edwin Valero has been repeatedly mentioned as Pacquiao's next possible opponent but the undefeated Venezuelan boxer will have to hurdle legal constraints to fight in the United States while Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum says Valero is not a big draw in the US and it would take him a much longer time to do his promotional job to build up his name.

Antonio Margarito has yet to hurdle his come-back fight and, like Valero, he also needs to secure a boxing license to fight again in the United States. Margarito was stripped of his boxing license for having violated Nevada boxing rules by inserting illegal wraps inside his boxing gloves during his last fight with Shane Mosley. Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez is also calling on Pacquiao for another chance to validate his claim that the referee erred in his decision saying he won in one of their last fights. A few days ago another popular Mexican boxer Erik Morales has revived his call for a fourth encounter with the popular Filipino boxer after winning over Jose Alfaro in their recent fight in Monterrey, Mexico.

Considering the fighting stance and boxing styles of Mayweather and other possible opponents, many boxing fans believe that Shane Mosley would be the best draw for Pacquiao's penultimate fight. Shane Mosley, they observed, does not back out from an offensive assault and Pacquiao, being an offensive fighter, will add to fireworks that boxing fans love to see in a boxing fight. For these reasons, boxing fans say that a Pacquiao-Mosley boxing fight would be a better match that is guaranteed to keep the audience on their toes for continuous boxing action.

'Boycott This!' Filipino boxing fans will definitely watch Mayweather-Mosley on May 1

Despite protests from hard-hugging Manny Pacquiao fans from all around the world, the fight between Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley remains an intriguing match-up to several Filipino boxing fans and fight fans around the world in general. Am I going to watch this fight? Hell yes!!! And I agree with our good friend from NYC Michael Marley that boycotting this event would be "stupid even for Pacquiao groupies". It really is. Now, I can understand why many of you wouldn't want to shelf out your hard-earned coin to see Mayweather's "boring style" of boxing as some people coin it to be, but the significance of a bout like this is something that makes the fight a "can't miss".

People will have different reasons to want to see this fight.

You got those who have been waiting for this match-up for the past decade. Mayweather and Mosley after all were two of the most promising stars at the turn of the century. You got those who want to see Mayweather lose and get beat the hell up in the process. Mayweather has effectively created an image for himself as the bad guy with his antics such as throwing money around and bragging how rich he is and how rich others aren't. You got those that want to see Mosley define his brilliant career and turn it into a legendary one. Handing Mayweather his first loss will surely do that to him. As Mosley said in the fight's press conference in New York, May 1st will be "May weather's 1st loss".

Of course, you have the Mayweather fans that can't wait to see their boy do what he does best in the ring, which is winning. Whether you love him or hate him, you can't take away his undefeated record away from him until someone actually beats him.

Some will even watch it to simply see who Pacquiao might be fighting next.

Whatever your reasons may be, it also helps that there are options besides PPV if you want to watch this fight live.

If you don't feel like spending $50 on the Pay-per-view or flying to Vegas and catching it live, there are viewing parties and theater screenings like GBP did for Mayweather-Marquez all over the US for only a fraction of the PPV price or you can even see if for free if you check out my note below. And of course, you will always have the 'SOPcasts'. Whether you think "Who R U Picking" should have been named "Who R U Kidding?", "Who R U Plucking?" or "Who R U PACQing next?", (I wonder why they asked a 6th grader to come up with this fight's title) Filipino boxing fans will definitely be watching.

IS NAAZIM RICHARDSON TOO BUSY TO TRAIN MOSLEY FOR MAYWEATHER BOUT?

Mosley vs Mayweather

Steve Cunningham, Bernard Hopkins, Shane Mosley...3 fighters who all had fights scheduled within a 6-week timeframe and only 1 man to handle the head trainer duties...Brother Naazim Richardson. A busy man these days, Richardson has been spending the past few months dividing his time between several different training camps. That being said, one has to wonder if the world-class trainer was spread too thin as he worked with each fighter for their respective bouts. When posed with that very question, Richardson simply replied, "We make it work...It's just one of them things man."

In November of last year, Richardson began training Shane Mosley for a January 30th bout with Andre Berto, a fight that was ultimately cancelled just weeks before it was set to take place. Despite the fight being called off, there was no time for rest as Richardson immediately began working with Steve Cunningham, who was scheduled to face Matt Godfrey for the vacant IBF cruiserweight title on March 26. Ironically, that fight was also cancelled a week before it was supposed to occur. At the same time Richardson was training Cunningham, he pulled double duty working with future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins, who's preparing for his long-awaited rematch with Roy Jones Jr. on April 3. Of course, none of those bouts are quite as big or as difficult as the challenge that lies ahead for Richardson when his fighter, Shane Mosley, steps into the ring with undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 1.

"Shane is still in the beginning process of everything. We're just getting him started," Richardson recently revealed to FightHype's own Percy Crawford. That interview took place just last week, roughly 6 weeks before Mosley faces a fighter that, thus far, no one has been able to figure out. As Floyd Mayweather would say, "40 have tried and 40 have failed!" Indeed, Mayweather's elusive, defensive style has been a puzzle for every fighter that he's faced. It's a bit concerning that Mosley's own trainer admitted that, with 6 weeks left to go, they have yet to really begin working on the gameplan. Not to mention, Richardson will be somewhat busy this week with the typical Fight Week responsibilities in Las Vegas, as Hopkins makes final preparations for Saturday's clash with Jones. It's another week that Richardson will have limited time, if any at all, working with Mosley for what will likely be his most difficult challenge to date.

Although Richardson is confident of Mosley's abilities and doesn't appear to be worried about the remaining timeframe, you still have to wonder if 5 weeks is enough to properly prepare for a fight with Floyd Mayweather. Truth be told, it's really just 4 weeks if you consider that training is limited during the final week before the fight. Personally, I've never been a big fan of trainers dividing their time amongst fighters who have bouts so close together. Had Richardson spent the majority of his time working with Mosley, it probably wouldn't be an issue, but the fact that he said last week that they were just getting started, it's now become a serious concern. What do you think boxing fans? Will Richardson have enough time to properly train Mosley for his bout with Mayweather?

Stacy Goodson: Mosley will be the toughest opponent of Mayweather's life

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is a guy who loves to talk trash, stir up trouble, and incite controversy. In doing so, he always keeps his name on the tip of every boxing journalist's tongue. He's the ultimate villain of the sport, and it seems as though that's exactly the way he likes it. This writer has been critical of his arrogance, and his unbelievable lack of people skills. That said, there's no denying that the guy is a defensive genius the likes of which the sport has rarely seen. In fact, he may be the greatest defensive technician ever. He can dodge, duck, and counterpunch like no other athlete in the sport today. He can land blindingly quick, accurate counterpunches as he backpedals. He can slip a punch, disappear from a corner, and reappear in the middle of the ring—momentarily causing his opponent to have to search for him. Most opponents have found it all but impossible to land anything flush.

He often leans forward with his left hand dangling at his side, daring his opponent to take a shot. If his opponent accepts the challenge and misses, Mayweather can land that left hand at the speed of light. Perhaps one of Mayweather's main assets his his ring intelligence. He's a very smart fighter who takes few risks. He tends to conserve his energy by placing his shots carefully with pin-point accuracy. He rarely throws combinations consisting of more than two punches, but the ones he throws usually score. If Mayweather has a weakness in the ring, it's yet to be discovered. His record is 40-0, with 25 KOs.

On Jan. 24, 2009 Shane Mosley completely annihilated Antonio Margarito in a ninth round TKO. If he can come to the ring on May 1 looking like he did on that night, it should be a great fight. Along with a knockout rate of 75 percent, Mosley possesses the ultimate combination of lightning-quick hands, excellent agility, and power. Mosley's record stands at 46-5, with 39 KOs. Mosley’s main weakness is his lack of jabbing abilities. He is known for throwing lazy, pawing jabs that are intended more for measuring than for scoring purposes. This could be a major disadvantage in a bout against Mayweather. He'll certainly need to be throwing strong, hard jabs and concentrating on Mayweather's body.

Once thing that is certain is that Mosley will pressure Mayweather, and pressure combined with speed, power, and agility could actually spell trouble for Mayweather. Jose Luis Castillo and Oscar De La Hoya gave Mayweather some degree of trouble when they pressured him. De La Hoya is the only boxer to lose to Mayweather by split decision. Every other victory of Mayweather's career have come by KOs and UDs. Forget about the Mayweather – Marquez fight. Mosley isn't going to be an easy fight for Mayweather.

Professional boxer and trainer, Stacy Goodson of Paris, Arkansas said: “I see it being one of the toughest fights of Mayweather's life. I think it'll go the distance unless there's a quit or a disqualification. I see two people who have a lot to prove, but I don't think Shane is fast enough or able to walk Mayweather down. I see 8 to 10 rounds in favor of Mayweather.” Mayweather is heavily favored for the fight, and rightly so, but Mosley definitely has more than a puncher's chance.

It could be a long night for Mayweather.

Hopefully the winner of this match goes on to fight Manny Pacquiao for the WBO and WBA titles, as well as pound for pound bragging rights.

Who visits Pacman Next, Mayweather or Mosley?

One of the most anticipated bouts of the year so far is fast approaching, One month from today Floyd Mayweather Jr will meet Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada. The bout is intriguing for a number of different reasons, for one a few in the game who’s opinion I respect have actually tipped Mosley to win, I don’t see it myself but hey there would be less to debate if we all picked the same guy. The other interesting factor is Mosley will be the first true welterweight Mayweather has fought since Carlos Baldomir way back in 2006. Most pundits and fans alike have been harsh to the Grand Rapids born fighter for his insistence on fighting smaller men like Juan Manuel Marquez and Ricky Hatton, or his fighting an on the slide De La Hoya. The same people fail to recognise Mayweather began his career at 130 pounds (Super Featherweight)

We live in an era where fighters are always on the move, making the transition from one weight to another has become a whole lot easier since the creation of the intermediate divisions. I don’t like it myself but we must stay consistent, to ridicule one you must ridicule all. I feel the Mosley fight gives the self styled Money Mayweather the perfect platform to display his greatness, however should Mayweather win convincingly I have no doubt some detractors will find an angle to further ridicule his performance. To small, too slow, over the hill, he never had his corn flakes this morning; the truth is the confident outspoken Mayweather will always have his detractors. When thinking the possible outcome of a fight I don’t put too much stock in either fighter’s last performance, I like to delve a little deeper. Analysing the last 5 fights and searching for the last time either fighter faced someone with a similar style.

Mosley
When looking at Shane two things are blatantly obvious, he is 38-years-old and has been inactive for over a year. As you study his previous performances you will notice he does really well against come forward fighters, the typical Mexican stand and fight style like that of Fernando Vargas (who Mosley stopped twice) or a Ricardo Mayorga who Mosley knocked out when the two met in 2008. Then you analyse the two fights Mosley lost in 2004 to Ronald Wright, Winkey was a defensive fighter, a ring technician who put head before his fists. A style a younger Mosley could not cope with and lost the first bout by a wide margin, the second by majority decision.

Mayweather is another level altogether whose modus operandi is defensive mastery, so if a younger, fresher and faster Shane could not figure out the Wright riddle, I give him no chance of figuring out the most gifted defensive fighter of this generation in Floyd Mayweather Jr. Shane has proved in the past he is a versatile fighter who can both box and move and has certainly faced the better opposition, however at 38 he may have bitten off a little more than he can chew in Mayweather.

Mayweather
When Mayweather returned to the sport in 2009 he faced Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez who at the time was ranked no 2 pound for pound, and the number one lightweight champion of the world. The former “lightweight” was the problem for most. Before Floyd’s temporary retirement he was competing in the welterweight division while Marquez had never competed above 135 pounds. A contractual catch weight of 144 pounds was agreed, the day before the fight Mayweather weighed in 2 pounds over and was forced to pay Marquez $600,000, (300,000) per pound. If we took anything from the fight it was Mayweather came back as good as he left, the speed, reflexes and movement where better than ever as Mayweather boxed his way to a 12 round unanimous decision. Mayweather usually dominates his opponent and as yet no-one has come close to scripting the blue-print on how to beat the five weight champion. Mexican Jose Luis Castillo came closest when the two met in 2002. Other have said Mayweather’s most troublesome rounds have come against southpaws DeMarcus Corley and Zab Judah, however in both fights Mayweather managed to overcome both en-route to a convincing unanimous decision win.

Most are of the opinion a Mosley vs. Pacquaio fight will be more fan friendly than that of a Mayweather Boxing clinic; and they may be right. But in my opinion the outcome will be more predictable than a Mayweather - Pacquiao fight where I can see a scenario playing out for either man being victorious. Boxing needs a Pacquiao – Mayweather fight, both are atop the pound for pound summit with the boxing world is split down the middle as to who they think will win.

Gearing Up For HBO's Mayweather/Mosley 24/7

We are a little over a week away from HBO's Mayweather vs Mosley 24/7. I'm a huge fan of the show, and it deserves all of its accolades and Emmy awards. I was thinking of ways to make the series better, whether it be changing the narrator or altering the length. But I couldn't come up with any necessary changes based on those factors. The lengths of the episodes and series duration are all fine. Narrator, Liev Schreiber, is smooth, and really, just perfect. I haven't seen Schreiber in a film since the totally unnecessary Manchurian Candidate remake, so I don't know how his acting career is going, but he's doing great work with HBO. The show is excellent, but I'm not as stoked as I should be for this next installment. It's Mayweather. I need a new angle on him. This is Floyd's fourth go around, and I feel like we've covered just about all of the areas. We know about his wealth and love for money. The relationship between he, his father, and his uncle have been beaten to death. Although, if they want to add something new to this topic area, subtitles for Floyd Sr. and Roger would help viewers immensely.

They've shown Floyd's children. Oh yes, the children. Um, where did these children come from? Who did he sire them with? This is the one angle in Mayweather's life that's completely lacking. Who is he banging? I'm sorry, I know many of you may think I need to Wikipedia him, or look up old issues of US or People, but why should I, when HBO's 24/7 should be touching on this for me. I remember seeing the "significant others" for De La Hoya, Hatton, Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez and Cotto, but never Mayweather. Sex and intimacy are a part of a person's life, and I would like to get a look at who the fighter is sharing his time with. Why is this aspect so absent from Floyd's life?

It would be awesome if he was gay.

I'm not making an allegation, so I hope Floyd doesn't find out about this column, and I wind up getting shot at next time I go skating in Vegas. Nor am I making an insult. Those who know me, understand that I'm the most pro-gay/lesbian person you'll find. I'm in favor of homosexual marriage, adoption, right to serve openly in the military–the whole nine. Also, I think it's juvenile and insulting when others try to slur Floyd with terms like "Gayweather" and the such. I actually think that an openly gay Floyd Mayweather Jr. could do enormous good for the gay cause-more than Ricky Martin for instance. Imagine one of the greatest boxers of the past 20 years, and a first ballot Hall-of-Fame legend, as an openly gay fighter. It would be huge. I know the great Emile Griffith was rumored and understood by many to be gay in the 60's and 70's, but that's not the same at out and proud.

It would be one of the most talked about moments in television history, if one of the 24/7 episodes ended with Mayweather Jr jumping into the arms of some muscle-head for a full on hardcore make-session. People would be dropping their drinks in slow motion, with their mouths agape, all across the world. Don't start berating me with the "evidence" that Mayweather's children are proof of his heterosexuality. We've all heard of "down-low". Plus, plenty of gay men have had intercourse with women, and have sired children-it means nothing. Again, I have no idea if Pretty Boy Floyd is gay, but if he is, 24/7 would be a great opportunity to kick the closet doors open. If Floyd is straight, can I at least see a segment or two showing who he's dating, or having "relations" with? Does Floyd date outside of his race? Is he into skinny super models, or full-figured "more to love" types? Does he spend his time with ghetto "chickenheads", or do preppie sophisticated types appeal to Floyd?

Look, every part of Mayweather's life has been turned inside out on 24/7, and it's getting a tad tired. I simply want this one last, unknown, angle placed on display. Any man or woman who shares a special intimate place in Floyd's life is a compelling figure. Floyd has a fascinating personality. Who puts up with him on an intimate basis? I want to know. And so do you.

Mosley on 24/7
I'm so glad that Shane Mosley is going to be featured on 24/7. His career has fascinated me. He's been an elite fighter for almost 15 years in three different weight classes. Mosley has been compared to Sugar Ray Robinson because of his flashy, fighting spirit and hand-speed. Mosley has good looks, and is extremely well spoken-long thought of as one of the nice guys in the sport.

Why hasn't this guy ever become a crossover star?

I've never understood it. I guess the easy answer is that Oscar De La Hoya took on that role during the same era. However, Foreman was a talk-show and commercial staple during the Holyfield era. Mayweather and Pacquiao are both big stars right now. Why didn't Mosley make it big; particularly after his first victory over Oscar? I hope the 24/7 series delves into this. Sure, Mosley headlined some high grossing pay-per-views, but only with Oscar as the marquee draw. Mosley has never been a humongous draw on his own. I'd like to know his thoughts about this. Mosley's career has had a lot of professional and personal ups and downs, and I'm very anxious to see it all on display-including his partnership with Golden Boy Promotions.

Of course one issue that 24/7 will have to focus on is Mosley's performance-enhancing drug (PED) use. You got to figure that PEDs will be a major aspect of the show because of the unprecedented Olympic-style blood-test program both fighters will be on. Also, the PED issue killed the proposed Pacquio/Mayweather showdown. Mosley is the poster-boy for PED usage in boxing. He doped up prior to his last victory over De La Hoya in 2003. Mosley–who closely worked with PED manufacturer, BALCO–claims that he didn't know he was taking any banned substances. His claims are dubious and refuted by BALCO representatives. This needs to be touched on, but shouldn't be the focus. To Mosley's credit, he's agreed to Olympic-style blood-testing this time around, to prove that he's not cheating anymore.

Another major issue from Shane's past that needs to be featured, is his relationship with his father. By all accounts they're still close, but Shane Mosley's father was fired from being his son's trainer on two separate occasions. Mosley is currently trained by Nazim Richardson, who not only led Mosley to one of the best performances of his career last January versus Antonio Margarito, but also helped bring about the revelation that Antonio was a cheating glove loader prior to that bout. Nazim Richardson, who is also Bernard Hopkins' trainer, needs to be introduced to the broader sports public on the HBO 24/7 showcase. He deserves the notoriety, and he's a damn good trainer to boot. It should be quite an interesting series this go around. Mosley v. Mayweather has been a decade in the making. Both have called each other out at various points in the past 10 years, but for some reason or another, the two have never gotten a chance to "get it on". After Pacquiao/Mayweather, this is the "biggest" bout that can be made. HBO always does these episodes well, but I hope that they touch on a few of the issues I've focused on in this column. In a couple of weeks, I'll breakdown who will win and why. Honestly, I haven't decided yet. Initially, I favored Mosley by knockout, and then due to Mosley's layoff, I tended to favor Mayweather by decision. Now after spending lots of time watching some of both fighters' previous bouts on Youtube, I'm favoring Mosley again. I'll be breaking it all down soon enough. Till next time, enjoy this weekend's fights.

Something you may not have known about Floyd Mayweather

It's rather easy for boxing scribes to pick apart Floyd Mayweather Jr from their keyboards across the country. Many negative things have been written about him from various boxing writers, including yours truly. The facts are fact though, so anything that this writer has written about concerning Floyd Mayweather Jr have all been true. The steroid allegations are true. The fact that he's fought smaller opponents is true. The fact that he demanded Olympic style blood testing is true. Do you know what else is true? Floyd Mayweather Jr also does some pretty good things for those in need. Yes, you heard me right. I know, I know, this will not sit well with Manny Pacquiao fans, but I give credit where credit is due.

Mayweather has a great cause called "The Floyd Mayweather Jr Foundation." It a not for profit organization, and it's mission is to empower and encourage community alliances, impact youth leadership and strengthen family foundations through community development, entrepreneurial-ism and education resulting in a healthier community. Floyd also feeds the homeless and hungry in Las Vegas regularly. Mayweather has no doubt brought on a lot of his negative press, but he's not quite the monster that people think he is. He is also an extremely gifted prize fighter so love him or hate him, you can't take that away from him. Has he fought the best the sport has to offer? No he has not. His upcoming fight against Shane Mosley will provide him with a great opportunity to shut up his critics.

I spoke to the Assistant Mississippi Athletic Commissioner Patrick Turner today. I got his thoughts on the upcoming
Mayweather vs Mosley fight. Turner is leaning toward a Mosley upset, "If we see the same Mosley that showed up against Antonio Margarito, he can pull of an upset. Shane is at the top of his game right now. We haven't seen anything from Mayweather since he beat the smaller Juan Manuel Marquez." Turner likes Mosley's recent efforts, " Shane Mosley is fighting at the top of his game right now. This is the best Mosley that we have seen in years."

There really shouldn't be much question as to how talented Floyd Mayweather Jr is inside of the ring. The man can fight, and is a very smart fighter at that. Not everyone likes his style, but at the end of the day, nobody has ever defeated him. Floyd's behavior outside of the ring has many questions, but he's not all bad. His foundation is doing good, healthy, and positive things for people who desperately need it.

Roach picks Mayweather over Mosley

Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach is predicting that Floyd Mayweather will beat WBA welterweight champion Shane Mosley by decision in their 12-round bout in Las Vegas on May 1. If Mayweather dethrones Mosley, it will only be logical for Pretty Boy to face Pacquiao, who holds the WBO title, in a unification showdown. Pacquiao is now recognized as the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, an honor that was once Mayweather’s until he retired over two years ago. Mayweather is now back in active ring duty and itching to reclaim his throne.

“Shane’s my friend and I hope he wins but he has trouble with speed and movement and likes guys to come to him so it’s going to be difficult,” said Roach in a guest column on London’s Boxing News.

Roach, who has been involved in a word war with Mayweather’s foul-mouthed father Floyd Sr., seemed reconciliatory in remarking that “I like Floyd as a person ...out of the Mayweathers, he’s one of the better ones.”

The celebrated Wild Card Gym of Los Angeles owner said Mayweather has never disrespected him and always calls him Mr. Roach. But in anticipation of a duel with Pacquiao, Roach said it’s likely that Mayweather will turn against him in the process of hyping what is being billed as the “Fight of the Decade.”

“Floyd’s scared of my guy,” said Roach. “I let him use my gym when he was doing ‘Dancing With The Stars’ before the Ricky Hatton fight and I’ve known him since he was a little kid. He’s not a bad guy. But the only way the fight with Manny is going to happen is we go by the commission drug-testing rules.”

Roach said just like every fan, he’s looking forward to a Pacquiao-Mayweather battle. Still, he expressed doubt that it will push through “if (Mayweather) tries to bring in his own company for Olympic-style testing or any of that rubbish, the fight’s not going to happen.”

Roach, 50, said if the Mayweather-Mosley winner dodges Pacquiao, boxing will suffer a serious blow.

“Let’s face it, people want to see Pacquiao-Mayweather,” said Roach, quoted by Bob Velin in USA Today. “If the Mayweather-Mosley winner doesn’t come around, where do we have to go? We’re going to do whatever it takes to make that fight. The only thing we won’t do is to let Floyd call the shots and make the rules because he’s not that big. Any commission test and sanctioning body test, we’ll do. But we will not do private testing with a company that Floyd hires.”

The issue of blood-testing derailed plans to stage a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight last March. Mayweather insisted on Olympic-style random blood-testing even the day or hours before the fight while Pacquiao said he will agree to the examination only up to 14 days leading to the bout.

“Floyd doesn’t realize that he’s killing his own sport,” said Roach. “I get upset that some people can’t accept that Manny’s just a great fighter. Manny is one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever seen. He has a lot of distractions around him but once he comes through the gym doors, all that goes away.”

Mayweather has accused Pacquiao of taking performance enhancing drugs or steroids to maintain his speed and power while moving up and down different weight divisions. But what Mayweather failed to appreciate is the scientific conditioning program that Pacquiao undergoes in invading higher weight classes. Since Pacquiao contracted conditioning coach Alex Ariza for his assault on the WBC lightweight title held by David Diaz in 2008, he has been unstoppable. With Ariza in his team, Pacquiao has won three world titles in two years – lightweight, lightwelterweight and welterweight – to add to his collection that now lists seven championships in different divisions. So far in his career as a trainer, Roach has worked with 27 world champions. Pacquiao is No. 1 in his list of clients.

“I think I have the best fighters in the world, that’s why I’m the best trainer,” he said. “When the bell rings, I sit down and they fight. My key to success is hanging out with good fighters. I’m probably having more fun than I ever had in my life.”

Roach said there’s no short-cut to success and it’s all about working hard.

“I know my job but when they get in the ring, I sit down so I give the credit to them,” he continued. “But I like getting the Trainer of the Year award which the Boxing Writers Association of America awarded me for the fourth time recently because it’s named after my trainer and mentor Eddie Futch so it’s a great honor. Training fighters is all I do. I don’t have time for anything else.”

Boxing writer Bert Randolph Sugar said, “Freddie Roach is up there among the all-time greats. Like a jockey with a racehorse, a trainer is known by the productivity of his fighters. And Freddie’s done one hell of a job.”

Pacquiao is Roach’s prized trophy. Together, the team is unbeatable in pro boxing today.

Pacquiao not retiring even if he wins election

Mayweather vs Mosley

Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao is not retiring from boxing this year or even if he wins the congressional election in May, Pacquiao’s adviser said Sunday. Michael Koncz, the Canadian adviser of Pacquiao, said the Filipino boxing idol is not yet keen on retiring from boxing after his victorious fight with Ghanian Joshua Clottey last March. Pacquiao, who is running for congressman in Sarangani in the May elections, has been asked by his mother Dionisia to consider retirement from boxing and instead concentrate on his family’s businesses.

“Even if Manny wins as congressman he can still do boxing — at least two fights a year,” Koncz said.

He added that Pacquiao could not just leave boxing if he can still have the capability to fight because it’s his livelihood.

“Imagine the money he would lose in his every fight at least a minimum of $15 million if he stops boxing,” Koncz said.

Asked about the possibility of Pacquiao’s fight with
Floyd Mayweather, Koncz said it was Mayweather who was making all the excuses to avoid a match with Pacquiao. He said Mayweather should not impose his conditions and terms for Manny to follow in their boxing match. He said their camp could possibly look for other fighters in the higher middleweight division to match up with Pacquiao.

Koncz was accompanying Pacquiao in his political campaign in Sarangani.

The Filipino boxing sensation and his wife Jinkee joined the procession of the Station of the Cross during the Good Friday at his hometown in Kiamba, Sarangani. -

Mayweather vs Mosley: Fight Preview and Prediction

Mayweather vs Mosley

Preview: The biggest fight of the year thus far takes place on May 1 in Las Vegas, as Floyd Mayweather fights Shane Mosley. It is a rare match between two fighters who have been at or near the top of the pound-for-pound best list for the past decade. They are both still very viable and in great form. Boxing fans eagerly await this fight. Floyd Mayweather is the favorite, a perk that comes with being undefeated over a career that spans nearly 14 years. The 33-year-old has bad hands, but is generally well preserved, having not been subjected to beatings and hard fights. Some might say this is due to careful matchmaking or perhaps it is just due to Mayweather’s brilliance. The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

Putting the questions surrounding the quality of recent Mayweather opponents aside, he is facing a top guy in this fight and deserves credit.
Shane Mosley is coming off a destructive knockout of fearsome Antonio Margarito. Shane looked renewed after some had begun to write him off. He battered Margarito at will, looking as good as ever in the process. Sure he is 39, but he has lived a Spartan lifestyle that allows him to still be a top guy.

Floyd doesn’t have the losses
Mosley has, but he might if he fought the same level of competition. Mosley’s resume reads like a who’s-who of boxing over the last 2 decades, highlighted by two wins over a prime Oscar De La Hoya. He lost twice each to Vernon Forrest and Winky Wright and dropped a close one to a then-undefeated Miguel Cotto. His win over Margarito, however, confirmed his stature at the top of the sport is still solid. Mayweather could grow old overnight. Fighters don’t continue unabated forever. He will have had only fight in 28 months by the time he climbs into the ring on May 1. Mosley hasn’t been too active himself, as this is his first fight since beating Margarito in January of last year. Old pros like these shouldn’t have too much of a problem. Sometimes layoffs are good for aging fighters.

I think Mosley will be Mayweather’s toughest fight in quite a while. Mosley has great speed and can still hit extremely hard. He is probably the puncher in this fight. Mayweather is just so clever in the ring, knowing how to shade the conditions in his favor. He is a master of distance and a defensive whiz. After over a decade at the world-class level, he has yet to be in deep peril. His chin and fighting pride are also strong suits.

Prediction: I see a fast-paced and even encounter over the first half of the fight. Mayweather will be troubled by Mosley’s speed and combinations, while keeping Mosley honest with snappy counters and a strong jab. As the fight wears on, Mayweather will settle into more of a groove and begin to better time Mosley with combinations that will take a little wind out of his sails. I see Mayweather’s ring IQ playing a major role. Mosley, a clever fighter himself, will not be able to adjust late as the fight gets away from him. Mayweather will outbox Mosley to win a clear unanimous decision.

Boxing insiders speak from ringside at the Mandalay Bay on Mayweather vs Mosley

Mayweather vs Mosley

Last night’s rematch between bitter rivals Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones failed to deliver on the definitive conclusion that both men had promised heading into the contest. After some notable fouls, a small riot, and many ho-hum rounds, Hopkins would walk away with a decision win by scores of 118-109 and 117-110 twice. While the action wasn’t the kind that elicited much response from those watching at the Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort, people in attendance still had another Las Vegas showdown heavily on their minds with the May 1st clash between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Shane Mosley. When talking to boxing insiders in particular it became increasingly evident that this is the fight everybody has their eye on. Once-beaten Super Middleweight Dyah Davis was in town as a part of Hopkins’ team, as the New York native had served as a key sparring partner for Bernard at the Normady gym during their preparation in Miami, Florida. Davis is coming off of an impressive 5th round stoppage over Jose Medina this past January and shared his thoughts on the bout.

“That’s a pick em’ fight man," Davis said. "I think that fight probably should have been made a few years ago. I like
Mosley but I think Mayweather is going to take a decision. Floyd is good for the game but I think a lot more people want to see him get defeated and are more interesting in tuning in to see that happen more than anything else.”

Moments later former champion and top-level trainer Eddie Mustafa Muhammad was spotted in the stands. Muhammad is known best for this work with light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson and has been a fixture on the Vegas scene for many years. The affable Muhammad seems to be on the fence regarding the contest.

“First of all I commend both of them for giving the fans what they really want to see,” Muhammad claimed. “Two of the best fighters in the world in an era where they both were good. As far as picking a winner I don’t want to pick a winner because I am good friends with both of them and I want it to remain like. I can tell you it is going to be a very competitive fight.”

If there was ever a journalist who has gotten to know both
Mayweather and Mosley well on a first hand basis it very well could be Riverside’s David Avila, who serves as the West Coast Bureau Chief for The Sweet Science. Avila has covered both men extensively in camp and often runs across the two fighters while covering bouts in the Vegas and Southern California areas. It had been rumored that while Mayweather seems to be crushing his sparring partners in camp, that Mosley himself hasn’t been looking as sharp. Avila insists that he can’t base his judgment on hearsay and also revealed that he will likely be heading to Big Bear sometime this week to again report on Shane, who he claims has tenacity in training unlike anyone he has ever witnessed.

“Basically he has a certain intensity that he always brings to all of his fights,” Avila stated. “When I see him in the gym I can usually tell if he is on it or not. I haven’t seen Mayweather as much because he kind of closes things down but I do want to see him to see how sharp he is.”

As the evening marched forward Welterweight hopeful Rashad Holloway dropped in to give his two cents on the matchup. Holloway recently relocated to Nevada permanently after spending much time in Los Angeles at the Wild Card Gym and thinks that Mayweather could be in trouble if he applies the wrong strategy.

“I think Shane has a shot,” Holloway admitted. “He has always had trouble with speed and movement and if Floyd sticks to his game plan, from what I have heard, I don’t know which way it is going. I have heard that Floyd wants to go in there and be aggressive and go after him. Floyd can fight on the inside. Shane is very strong, maybe not the greatest fighter on the inside, but I think that is a mistake to stand in front of Shane Mosley. He should try to box and move. I think he wants to prove how tough he is. Floyd can do it all and I think he is the better fighter on the outside in this fight.”

As he was on his way to the media room, The Ring’s Doug Fischer stopped to share his thoughts. Fisher was serving as a ringside analyst for the Hopkins-Jones II card and has been familiar with the West Coast fight scene for several years. In closing Fisher seems to be the only one to really come forward and favor Mosley.

“I think it’s a really good matchup. It’s the fight that I am most looking forward to this year. I think they matchup up very well style wise and they mesh. You have a boxer against an aggressive boxer-puncher. I favor the older man, Shane Mosley. I just think he is going to be the aggressor throughout the bout. He’s going to be throwing hard punches from the first round until the 12th round. I just don’t see Mayweather doing anything to really get Mosley’s respect of keep him off of him. I do think he will box well in many rounds but I don’t know if that will be enough for him to win the majority of rounds on all three judges’ cards.”

Why have Golden Boy Promotions, Mayweather Jr, and Mosley kept the initial drug tests a secret?

Mayweather vs Mosley

After all the hype and quarreling over Olympic style drug testing, why have Golden Boy Promotions, Floyd Mayweather Jr, Shane Mosley, and the USADA kept the details of the first round of drug tests and results a secret? With less than 4 weeks until the fight, why are there no details on the most publicized drug testing in the history of Boxing? Let’s examine further. Keith Kizer, Executive Director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, reported that Mayweather and Mosley have already been tested by the USADA. However, there are no reported details of when the test was taken or what the results are. This makes no sense to me. This fight has become the “Drug Match” of Boxing. All the parties involved participated in multiple press conferences discussing and hyping the details and significance of being the first boxers to participate in Olympic Style Drug Testing. Yet, there has been secrecy as to when the first test was taken and what the results are.

We were told that the details would be made public. Perhaps the USADA and GBP should have clarified how long it would take before the results were made public because as of right now, it remains unknown as to when or if we will get the drug test details. If you remember, both fighters are to make there whereabouts known to the USADA at all times and drug samples would be kept by the USADA for future testing as well. Both fighters also face a 2 year ban from Boxing if they test positive. So with all of these strict obligations, why are we still in the dark about the initial drug tests?

The most frustrating thing about all of this is the that the USADA hyped up these fighters for being courageous in their efforts to clean up the sport. Yet, neither fighter has been courageous enough to tell the public about the details of their initial drug tests.

“These athletes are courageous in their position and their desire to be held to the most stringent anti-doping program to protect their right to compete clean. At this point, both athletes have agreed to USADA’s testing protocols, including both blood and urine testing, which is unannounced, which is anywhere, anytime.” Travis Tygart, USADA

Conclusion

Eric Davidson Sacramento, CA “I thought that this drug testing was supposed to be transparent and open to the public?”

That’s what we were led to believe. However, that’s not what’s happening. We have to hear second hand about the details.

Jennifer Johnstone Sacramento, CA “Why hasn’t GBP issued a press release about the first round of tests?”

I wonder the same thing. They issue press releases for everything else. You would think that Golden Boy Promotions would issue a press release about the initial tests especially considering how much they hyped up the entire implementation of drug testing.

If Mayweather wins does he take the number one spot away from Pacquiao?

Mayweather vs Mosley

Floyd Mayweather vs Shane Mosley will likely be the biggest selling fight of the year and pits the second and third ranked welterweights against each other. What makes the fight intriguing is that Mayweather has yet to fight any of the current crop of top welterweights. With a win over Mosley some will rank Mayweather ahead of Pacquiao. Obviously fans of either will claim that their fighter is the better and should be ranked accordingly. The question will be how you compare the recent wins of the pair, and especially those that happened at welterweight. Both have fought Hatton, both have fought De Le Hoya, so not much to choose from there.

The real comparison will be considering Mosley along side Cotto and Clottey. On the Mayweather side of the argument there will be fans out there saying that beating Mosley is at least as impressive as beating Cotto, and that Clottey isn’t even a factor. A decent top ten win, but not really relevant when discussing the very top of the rankings tree. In most ranking systems, Pacquiao attained his win over the number two ranked welterweight at the time in Miguel Cotto. Going on rankings alone then he still has a more impressive win than Mosley. There is also the argument to be made however that Cotto was past his best after the beating he took from Antonion Margarito. Then again Mosley at 38 probably isn’t at the peak of his powers either.

A case can be argued for either, but the best way to work the rankings out after May would be for Pacquiao to fight the winner of
Mayweather vs Mosley. Given that it probably won’t happen if Mayweather wins, then the only other way to guage their respective achievements will be to wait and see who both fight over the next year or so. There aren’t that many big names at welterweight right now that they can both continue to fight top guys, so sooner or later one of them will be visibly fighting lesser competition than the other.

A wild card entering the discussions sooner or later will be Antonio Margarito, who looks set to craw his way back into contention license from the CSAC or otherwise. A win over him for either man would clearly place them at the top of the rankings pile. Also there is Andre Berto to consider, at the moment a fringe contender but still undefeated and perhaps after another fight or two a force in the division.
Paul, Pittsburgh: “Pacquiao is a cheat and Floyd is a coward so neither of them deserves to be the top ranked guy. Hopefully someone comes up through the ranks and beats both of them”

James, Pittsburgh: “Mayweather can never be ranked higher than Pacquiao without fighting him, he’s too inactive, he doesn’t finish fighters that Pacquiao would have and he’s only fighting Mosley because he had to”

Sugar Shane Mosley Camp Notes

Mayweather vs Mosley

Mosley Confident With Camp Underway. For Sugar Shane Mosley, his May 1 mega-fight against Floyd Mayweather cannot come soon enough. Having longed for this fight for many years, he is mentally and physically ready for battle, with training preparations well underway. Following a three-city media tour which wrapped up in Los Angeles on March 4, Mosley immediately returned to Big Bear, Calif., where he owns a home and has trained since 1996. In the serene mountain environment, Mosley is relaxed, but working extremely hard in preparation for what he knows will be one of the toughest battles of his career. The fact that Mayweather steps into the ring with a record of 40-0 is not intimidating to the former pound-for-pound champ who is ready to take back his throne.

“I was 38-0 with 35 knockouts when I stepped into the ring and lost for the very first time,” said Mosley. “So when you say 40-0, that doesn’t mean a thing to me. All it means is that I’ll be the one giving him his first loss. No disrespect, but I really don’t think he’s been in there with a fighter like me, and I believe that when I beat Floyd, I will send him into retirement. May first will be May’s first loss.”

Small Tribe, Strong Tribe

The calm, quiet, and relaxed atmosphere that Mosley is enjoying at camp has been coupled with intense workouts. He and the rest of the Mosley Tribe (as Shane refers to them) stay on the property Mosley has owned since 2000, which includes his private home and a boxing gym. There is also plenty of room for housing sparring partners recruited to help with training. Running begins by 7:00 a.m. each morning and is followed by work with fitness trainer and massage therapist Gustavo Satragni, who is in camp with Mosley for the second time. Satragni, who has worked with the likes of Carlos Baldomir as well as some of the top soccer players from his native Argentina, concentrates his attention on improving Mosley’s stamina, balance and flexibility. Then it is off to breakfast with his team and a small group of familiar faces including his trainer Naazim Richardson, his best friend from childhood and second assistant Hassan Abdulrahim Jr., Elliott Ness who handles personal security, sparring partner Karl “Dynamite” Dargan and most importantly, his son Shane Mosley Jr. eats healthy, though weight is not a problem. After doing media interviews and resting during the day, it’s back to the gym in the evening, this time to concentrate on boxing training with Richardson and Hassan. In addition to hitting the heavy bags, mitts, and sparring, the team works on a full arsenal of strategies. After boxing, Mosley’s day wraps up with some additional stretching and a massage.

It’s The “Sugar Bowl” Every Tuesday Night

It not the competition you would expect the five-time World Champion and current WBA Welterweight World Champion to be up against, but every Tuesday night at 6 p.m., he is battling against local bowling enthusiasts…at the Bowling Barn in Big Bear, where Mosley joined a team of town merchants just over two years ago at the encouragement of a local restaurant owner, and competes in a weekly league. With a high score of 242, the bright lights of the league have him hooked, giving Mosley an opportunity to remain competitive out of the ring. Before taking up bowling, Mosley used to spend his spare time in camp snow boarding until Richardson put a halt to him doing so when he assumed the role of head trainer in late 2008.

“Bowling is something I just really enjoy,” said Mosley. “It’s a chance for me to relax with my tribe and people from this community, hone my skills and have a good time. Just like when I step in the ring, when it comes to bowling and basketball, another favorite sport of mine, I want to win.”

Ready For 24/7 Debut

Mosley has been a fan of HBO’s Emmy® award winning 24/7 since the series debuted in 2007. With the show’s first episode set to air on April 10 at 10:00 p.m. ET / 7:00 p.m. PT, Mosley, along with Mayweather, who has appeared on the show three times before, has allowed cameras behind-the-scenes to capture moments the often reserved Mosley has never shared before. Mosley was asked if he was concerned about the expected on-screen battle with the entertaining Mayweather.

“People who watch 24/7 Mayweather/Mosley will get to see the real me. I’m not worried about being over the top and doing anything crazy like Floyd. He’s playing a character and doing his thing. I’m just excited to let the fans in and give them a glimpse of my life and what it’s like leading up to one of the biggest fights of my career.”

How Much Longer? Not Long!

Mosley head trainer Naazim Richardson has been a busy man over the last six months. Working with both Shane Mosley and Bernard Hopkins, who just scored a unanimous decision victory over Roy Jones Jr. this past Saturday night in Las Vegas, Richardson has been away from home since December 15, a week after Hopkins fought Enrique Ornelas on December 2 in Philadelphia. At the time, he joined Mosley in Big Bear to begin training for his fight against Andre Berto which was originally scheduled to take place January 30 before Berto withdrew due to losing several members of his family in the earthquake in his home country of Haiti. With the Mayweather fight being signed for May 1 shortly after the cancellation, there was not much of a break in training for Team Mosley

“Other than a short break to visit my family and the time I was gone to train Bernard for the Jones fight, Shane and I have been with each other a lot. We had such a long camp for the Berto fight and we were working on speed and movement anyway. We got right back in rhythm and have moved forward with a very intense, but well paced training camp.”

Richardson’s background includes years of training amateurs, and he remembers both Mayweather and Mosley as talented young fighters who would one day be the professional World Champions they are today.

“I have a tape of Floyd from the amateurs and guess what? He was saying the same things back then that he says today. That’s Floyd, but Shane’s a different story. He always had that mild-mannered way about him and it’s a great attribute of his character and his success. I told him this fight is to solidify his legacy and become the 3rd Sugar in boxing worthy of being recognized for greatness.”
